A colony of red whiskered bulbuls continues to survive in Ferntree Gully and The
Basin in the Dandenong Ranges, 40kms east of Melbourne.
I monitored the colony in Ferntree Gully for three years when the population
shifted between four and up to eight birds each year. The bulbuls would visit
and roost near gardens with fruit trees and loved veranda and decking grapes. In
Ferntree Gully the bulbuls had to survive alongside red wattlebirds and brush
wattlebirds, as well as blackbirds and song thrush and seemed to disappear at
non
friuting times of the year.
In The Basin [not far from Ferntree Gully] bulbuls are reported in our Wildlife
Observers Club newsletter between October and March.
Last year I posted a query on birding-aus regarding red-vented bulbuls with
interesting responses.
In my understanding red-vented bulbuls are different from red-whiskered, and
were
also released in Melbourne some [a long time] time ago and a bird list survey
for
1987 from near Melbourne, which was passed onto me last year included the
red-vented form prompted my inquiry.
In 2000 I also saw a red-whiskered bulbul during an atlas survey at Banyule
Flats
wetlands.
