Lots happening in the Lockyer - spring is certainly here!
Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoo at home this-morning, Spotted Harrier still around
Abberton yesterday. This-morning we had our second White-winged Triller of
the season. Fairy Martins are whizzing through the verandahs. Rainbow
Bee-eaters are paired up and hawking from trees close to the house. Water
Dragons have reappeared on the creek bank over the last few days (Bearded
Dragons have been about for a week or two), and a beautiful young Carpet
Python ventured out into the sun one day last week. That was the clincher
that spring has arrived!
Out and about, we saw Banded Lapwings at several locations at the weekend
(one pair with young), and Ground Cuckoo-shrikes at two spots. The
Red-backed Kingfisher that Tim Kastelle saw a week ago was still around on
Saturday, likewise large numbers of Red-necked Avocets, Glossy Ibis and both
spoonbills, and even larger numbers of Pink-eared Duck and Cotton
Pygmy-geese. Dusky and White-breasted Woodswallows are in a few locations
too. Caspian and Gull-billed Terns at Lake Atkinson. Whistling Kites and
White-bellied Sea-eagles both on their nests.
We took a run to the west on Wednesday, only about an hour-and-a-half away,
but that got us into the drier up-range country where we turned up
Red-winged Parrots, Bluebonnets, Yellow-plumed Honeyeaters, White-winged
Fairy-wren, Yellow-throated Miner, Diamond Firetail and the like. Little
Eagle still around out there - very much a winter visitor hereabouts.
