Hello Birdos,
On Saturday afternoon myself and Keith Hutton visited a couple of Keith's
favourite birding spots in the Binya State Forest which is approximately 20
km east of Griffith in central west NSW. Many of the Acacia species,
particularly the Yarran (Acacia homophylla?) were flowering making the
forest a feast for the eyes. Considering the fairly constant breeze and the
rain periods we found a good diversity of birds. Some of these included
White-browed Treecreeper, Black-eared Cuckoo, Turquoise Parrot, Hooded
Robin, Brown Treecreeper, Speckled Warbler, Mulga Parrot, Splendid
Fairy-wren, Little Eagle, Emu, Striped Honeyeater, Painted Button-quail,
Crested Bellbird and White-winged Triller among many others.
The WWTriller was the first that either Keith or myself have noticed this
spring. There were 2 separate Black-eared Cuckoos that we found, both were
calling vigorously. One bird in particular we got a lovely view of, the
light showing up an almost peachy shade on the breast. It was many years
since I had seen my last White-browed Treecreeper and my memories of my
last one were a little hazy. The only bird that we observed was a very well
marked male. I hadn't been aware of how strongly streaked the belly of the
WBTC is.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Binya develops over the next month or two
after the respectable amount of rain that we have had in Griffith over the
last month or so.
Cheers,
Mick Todd
