Driving home from watching junior tennis in the Gisborne area, I looked left at one of the small farm dams of this area. On the dam was a small group of unusual ducks...from the fleeting glimpse not like anything I'd seen...almost like eider. Naturally I screamed to a stop, did a U turn, and retrieved my binocs from under the seat. I crept back slowly and trained the binocs on the dam. There were 5 very unusual ducks to one side, and a sixth near the reeds on the other side. They were all facing into the gusty wind. Grey heads, with a prominent white mark on the flank. Then I had to laugh. Some wag of a farmer had set up beautiful artificial ducks on the dam. Very realistic. I hope he had a laugh at my expense if he saw me.
