Birdline Victoria Update
for the week ending 12/8/01 Its been a quiet start to the month, although just today we have had two sightings of Freckled Ducks from either side of the Bay. We have also had the first sighting of Orange-bellied Parrots reported for the year and some more examples of Crested Pigeons seemingly expanding their range into the Melbourne area. 12 August 3 Freckled Ducks were seen from the bird-hide at the Edithvale Wetlands, thanks Joy Knight. 12 August 7 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos were seen flying low over a suburban driveway in Heidelberg Heights, thanks Mark Kliene. 11 August A Freckled Duck was seen at Lake Borrie North, along Paradise Road in the Western Treatment Plant, thanks Debra Saxon-Campbell. 9 August A pair of Crested Pigeons were seen in the close vicinity of Melbourne at the Albert Park Golf Course, thanks Bob Cook. 8 August 3 Orange-bellied Parrots were seen at the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee, thanks Richard Nowotny. 1 August A Gang Gang Cockatoo was seen flying from Were Street towards the centre of the south section of the Brighton Golf Course, around 94 days at this location, thanks Michael Norris. Late July A flock of 6 Australian Bustards were in a paddock along Noskes Settlement Road, off Hensley Park Road just north of Hamilton airport which is 12km north of Hamilton, thanks Steve Clark. 31 July 4 Masked Woodswallows, 200 White-browed Woodswallows and 150 Swift Parrots were seen feeding on profuse flowering of Yellow Gum, at the Illawarra State Forest (8km west of Stawell), thanks Simon Kennedy. 29 July 6 to 8 Peaceful Doves in a group at the Nuggerty Ranges near Maldon, thanks John Alexander. 29 July 60 Musk Duck on permanent water on Jack Smith Lake east, thanks Duncan Fraser. 28 July An Australasian Bittern was seen at Belmont Common and another flushed at Reedy Lake in Geelong, thanks Giles Daubeney. 28 July Australasian Bitterns are regularly being seen from the bird-hide at the Edithvale Wetlands on Edithvale Road, one was seen flying south across the wetlands on Saturday. 27 July 7 Glossy Ibis were seen with a pair of Swans on the northern pond on Paradise Road, near the small walkway at the Western Treatment Plant. 26 July A male Northern Shoveler was seen on South Lake Borrie at the Western Treatment Plant. South Lake Borrie is the large lake (pond 24) between the treed pond (pond 9) and Beach Road. It was near the concrete block where the Freckled Ducks hang out, but moved 500m east towards the bay, where it was resting, thanks Richard Loyn. 22 July A South Polar Skua was seen on a pelagic trip off Port Fairy, this is an exceptionally rare sighting for winter in Australia, thanks Mike Carter 22 July A pair of Swift Parrots near Goldsworthy Rd in Geelong, thanks Don Greaves 21 July Two groups of Swift Parrots were seen at Deep Lead Flora and Fauna Reserve. At 37 01' 34"s, 142 45' 05"e. Thanks Steve Clark. 21 July At Bannonckburn Reserve, about 20 km west of Geelong two groups of Swift Parrots were seen feeding among Golden Wattle, and a Black-chinned Honeyeater was also reported, thanks Lawrie Conole 16 July Swift Parrots were seen near Stawell, about 6 km north-west of the town and left about 1 km east of the Railway level crossing into Mutzig Lane, thanks Jack Krohn 15 July A pair of White-eared Honeyeaters were seen feeding in tree tops while five Black-chinned Honeyeaters were bathing in a dam 2-3 kilometres north of Newstead in the Muckleford Forest, thanks John Alexander 14 July A Glossy Ibis was seen at the Edithvale Wetlands, in the southern section, thanks Mike Carter Birdline Victoria is a service for birdwatchers to report and find out about rare and unusual birds in Victoria and is brought to you by the VicGroup of Birds Australia.
