We spent a weekend in Glen Davis, NSW about 3 hours west of Sydney. We
stayed at Quill Lake which is the new cottage owned by Goolloinboin'
Station. The cottage is about 11 years old and very suitable for 2 couples.
On Friday night driving into the valley we almost ran over an Echidna and
soon after saw Barn Owl, Boobook, and a Tawny Frogmouth in the middle of the
road.
On the Saturday we drove to the most reliable site in the Capertee Valley to
see Regent Honeyeaters. It is at a sign Gudan Park opposite a sign on a
gate 2805, 1.1 km east of Port Macquarie Road on the Glen Alice to Rylstone
road. Here we quickly saw 3 birds. The Regents were calling when we
arrived and calling when we stopped a couple of hours later.
We drove the full length of Port Macquarie road which is a picture postcard
of flowering wattles and grevilleas. We flushed 3 Turquoise Parrots.
Driving out in the morning we saw a Spotted Harrier and were surprised to
see several Rufous Songlarks singing away.
There is much blossom in the Eucalypts in the valley. We saw 14 species of
honeyeater and a total of 88 species.
At the Glen Davis museum we saw 3 Flame Robins and thoughout the valley
about 8 Hooded Robins.
Of particular interest was an all white Pied Currawong with a small flock of
Pied Currawongs. The bird was in a tree at the property which breeds
pheasants on the Glen Davis Road. It prompted Cindy Ryan to utter the
timeless birdwatching question "What is that?!"
On Sunday driving out of the valley we saw a flock of about 40 Plum-headed
Finches with about the same number of Zebra Finches at the bridge about 200
metres west the entrance to Goolloinboin'. On this property we saw Scarlet
Robins.
