Birdline Victoria Update for the week ending 27/7/01

Swift Parrots are the flavour of the week this week, with all of the sightings coming from the western half of the state.  Aside from these sightings, though, it has been a quiet week.

Michael Norris reports that the Gang Gang Cockatoos and the Pied Currawongs are still in the Bayside area, 12 weeks after the Gang Gangs first arrived.

A pair of Swift Parrots near Goldsworthy Rd in Geelong, thanks Don Greaves21 July
Two groups of Swift Parrots were seen at Deep Lead Flora and Fauna Reserve.  At 37 01' 34"s, 142 45' 05"e.  Thanks Steve Clark.

21 July
At Bannonckburn Reserve, about 20 km west of Geelong two groups of Swift Parrots were seen feeding among Golden Wattle, and a Black-chinned Honeyeater was also reported, thanks Lawrie Conole

16 July
Swift Parrots were seen near Stawell, about 6 km north-west of the town and left about 1 km east of the Railway level crossing into Mutzig Lane, thanks Jack Krohn

15 July
A pair of White-eared Honeyeaters were seen feeding in tree tops while five Black-chinned Honeyeaters where bathing in a dam 2-3 kilometres north of Newstead in the Muckleford Forest, thanks John Alexander

14 July
A Glossy Ibis was seen at the Edithvale Wetlands, in the southern section, thanks Mike Carter

5 July
A pair of Brolgas were seen between Beacc and Cressy, about 8Km west of Cressy, on the eastern side of the road, thanks Dean Woodford

4 July
An Australasian Bittern was was found dead on the road near the Salt swamp on the road from Barwon Heads to Geelong, and also on 4 July another was found injured on the road near the Bream Creek bridge at Breamlea, thanks Margaret Cameron

1-3 July
4 Gang Gang Cockatoos in red flowering gums in Cherry Road, Balwyn, thanks Jenny Ross

1 July
A Pale-headed Rosella, probably an escapee from the Zoo was seen at Royal Park in Melbourne, thanks Tim Dolby

An Azure Kingfisher was seen at Yarra Bend Park, near Kane's Bridge, along the Macfarlene Walk, thanks Tim Dolby

Pied Currawongs have been reported in unprecedented numbers from around the City of Bayside, including a report of 5 being fed by someone!  All of the birds that have been carefully studied have been immatures on the basis of brown tips to their secondaries, thanks Michael Norris

In the City of Bayside Gang Gang Cockatoos have been seen at Elsternwick Park (4), and near Dendy Park (12), all of the sightings in Bayside since the end of April have been in association with Sugar Gums, thanks Michael Norris

An Australasian Bittern was seen at the Western Treatment Plant at 270 South Road, thanks John Barkla

5 Great-crested Grebes were seen on Corio Bay off Kirk Point in the Western Treatment Plant, thanks John Barkla

A Black Kite was seen on the Geelong Freeway, near Little River, thanks Rohan Clarke

9 Australasian Bitterns were seen by wader counters at Reedy lake near Geelong, thanks Margaret Cameron
