Hi Birders,
I have noticed some recent observations from South
Australia re the arrival of Pallid Cuckoos. Here in Western Australia
i heard a Pallid Cuckoo calling for the first time this year at the Vines
Golf Course on 30 June 2001.A quick look through my records revealed the
earliest ever recording was a female on 18 June 1978 (the first male heard
that year was on 24 June 1978).
The first record of a male was on 19 June 1997 that
was also seen at The Vines Course.
I now know why a lot of birders do not
keep detailed records, it avoids the reminder such as above that we
are 23 years older!
A final comment on the Pallid Cuckoo is that in the
70's and 80's they were common in the Perth metro area, however are now not as
common in the suburbs. This is probably due to the decline in the native trees
and vegetation caused by the reduction in block size and backyard.
Best Regards
