Hi Everyone,
Friday 20th was a holiday in Cairns for show day so we took advantage and
checked out a few places around town.
The Esplanade was fairly quiet for waders with only a few Eastern Curlew,
Whimbrel, Black-fronted Dotterel and Masked Lapwing. Gull-billed, Caspian
and Crested Terns were present as were Intermediate, Little and Great
Egrets, Aust. Pelican, Royal Spoonbill and Aust. White Ibis. Roosting in a
tree by the Tradewinds Hotel, on the Esplanade were 3 Nankeen Night Herons.
Tenders have been called for a seawall surrounding the area that has been
filled in at the southern end of the Esplanade and work on this is due to
begin sometime in August. As yet there is no money available to upgrade the
existing wall along the rest of the Esplanade.
Yokeys Knob Lagoon (16° 48' 35''S 145° 42' 51''E) to the north of Cairns had
a good variety of birds, Magpie Geese, Plumed Whistling-Duck, 34 Green
Pygmy-geese, Pacific Black Duck, Grey Teal, Hardhead and Australasian Grebe.
Two Darters nests are on a island in the middle of the lagoon, one has 3 -
3/4 grown chicks and the other had an adult male sitting on it. There was
also one Nankeen Night Heron roosting here. Redden Island (16° 51' 48''S
145° 45' 20''E) was very quiet with the highlight being 4 Beach Stone-curlew
flying up the Barron River calling.

Cheers
Keith & Lindsay Fisher
