G'day All,
Whilst wandering around with good friends in their
garden the other day (Sunday) we noticed an unusual
sight? thrown away in the vacant block next door,
close to his fenceline were what looked like four
glass, of the old style, "lolly jars" the big old type
which looked in shape like edam cheeses, with one part
of the rounded side cutaway. The type you would see
about 40 years back on the candy store counter. What
stunned us both is two of them are being used by what
we believe to be are tree sparrows? they are Tree
Sparrows the doubt comes in the Tree Sparrow usage of
glass jars.
These are very olde and covered in moss and algae on
the outside.
The glass is very scared and tatty looking.
The neck of the jars point slightly downward. One
looks like it might/would get rain in it? the other I
would very much doubt it? the area is very dense in
undergrowth and the jars are nearly completely hidden.
Inside is a nest in each jar?
Has anyone else ever heard of unusual nesting
locations for Tree Sparrows.
