Regarding occurrences of Bell Miners in central Victoria, following Jack Krohn's
recent sighting near Castlemaine. I made mention a couple of weeks ago of some
sightings around Bendigo, one of which was a record from 1993 at
Strathfieldsaye. I was speaking to the person last night who initially recorded
that single bird and he informed me that every summer since 1993, a Bell Miner
has returned to his property, possibly the same individual. It is not known
where the bird could be coming from, but it probably uses riparian red gum
vegetation along Emu Creek and its larger tributaries to move around. Being
river red gum dominated, the woodland is occasionally subject to heavy lerp
infestation - a possible source of encouragement for the Bell Miner to keep
coming back.
