Hi Chris:

I'm answering your email on Peter's behalf.  I have been working with the Multimedia IT group at the ABC to resolve this problem. After weeks of intensive testing, we have been able to determine the source of the problem. Basically, we've narrowed it down to a server software component. An added factor is that the Birds site is running on quite an old machine. We have found out that it isn't a problem with the Atlas site... but a problem with the machine it is running on.

When I spoke with the IT Manager at the ABC last Thursday, he said that the Atlas site was going to be moved to a brand new server at the beginning of this week. I have tested the site on several different days this week and it has been up and running every time I have tested it. When was the last time you tested it? It may be that they are in the process of moving the site... and that it is still running on the old server. If that is the case, we'll still be experiencing outages as the server has to be rebooted every time this problem occurs. I will contact the ABC again to get a status update.

We will soon be putting up a mirror site up here in Melbourne. That means that we'll have a backup site for accessing your Atlas results (both will be accessible via the Birds Australia Atlas page).

If you have any other queries, please don't hesitate to contact Peter or myself. Unfortunately, we're both on holidays next week. But, we'll be glad to field any queries or enhancement ideas for the next release of the Atlas site after that time.

kind regards,

--cheryl
