As well as being Birds Australia's 100th birthday, July 1 was part of our winter wader count. John Newman and I counted almost no waders - just Masked Lapwings and a couple of Pied Oystercatchers - on Swan Island (near Queenscliff, on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria), and Masked Lapwings and a handful of Red-capped Plovers in some former shell-grit works known as Laker's Lakes, near Point Lonsdale. To improve our pathetic list we drove home to Geelong via the reservoir on Swan Bay rd (n of Ocean Grove), Lake Lorne at Drysdale, and Moolap saltworks. We were out from 8am to about 12.30; I then went to a lunch party which rather went on but returning in the gathering dusk I added Flame Robin and Wood and White-eyed ducks to our morning total. Obviously birds of the day were 2 Orange-bellied Parrots on Swan Island - new for John, but we were also struck but the very large numbers of Royal Spoonbills and by the numbers of calling Fantailed Cuckoos.
