As well as being Birds Australia's 100th birthday, July 1 was part of our
winter wader count. John Newman and I counted almost no waders - just
Masked Lapwings and a couple of Pied Oystercatchers - on Swan Island (near
Queenscliff, on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria), and Masked Lapwings and
a handful of Red-capped Plovers in some former shell-grit works known as
Laker's Lakes, near Point Lonsdale. To improve our pathetic list we drove
home to Geelong via the reservoir on Swan Bay rd (n of Ocean Grove), Lake
Lorne at Drysdale, and Moolap saltworks. We were out from 8am to about
12.30; I then went to a lunch party which rather went on but returning in
the gathering dusk I added Flame Robin and Wood and White-eyed ducks to our
morning total. Obviously birds of the day were 2 Orange-bellied Parrots on
Swan Island - new for John, but we were also struck but the very large
numbers of Royal Spoonbills and by the numbers of calling Fantailed Cuckoos.
