Greetings all
HANZAB uses these categories of movements (from Movements introduction,
volume 6):
MIGRATORY: All or most individuals moving between breeding and non-breeding
ranges (e.g. Yellow-faced Honeyeater or Scarlet Robin). (Not necessarily
between different countries, though obviously a Curlew Sandpiper would.)
PARTLY-MIGRATORY: Some individuals migratory, others resident (e.g. Grey
Fantail).
DISPERSIVE or NOMADIC: Movements apparently random within suitable habitat,
though this may reflect limited knowledge and mask regular migration or
other patterns of movements by part or all of the population (e.g. Black
and Pied Honeyeater).
RESIDENT: Most individuals non-migratory, though some may move long
distances (e.g. Black-chinned Honeyeater).
SEDENTARY: Most individuals not normally moving more than 50 km (e.g.
White-browed Scrubwren).
Hope this clears things up - other sources may use different definitions,
but HANZAB has been consistent in its
use of these terms.
Cheers
Geoff Price.
