Good eye,
For those birders in southern Sydney suburbs - found an adult
White-necked Heron wading last Sunday, not far from the road at the (much
degraded and overgrown) Cronulla Swamp, aka "Lake Francis" - opp. the
Cronulla Golf course, on the LHS of Captain Cook Dve, before Eloura
Rd.
- to access this miserable spot look for the sewage
vent, near which there's a short access track. The water levels there are about
perfect for the Ardea Pacifica.
When flushed, the White-necked Heron ousted a White-faced
heron to take the perch on top of the vent.
Phil Straw and myself also saw a brown goshawk there on
Saturday - (Phil used his hands and arms as a makeshift machete to beat a path
for our way through the bush on the causeway alongside this godforsaken
backwater). Maybe worth another look for crakes or rails.
Good hunting
