Subject: Masked Owl records (Vic.)
Lawrie Conole queries whether his record of a Masked Owl is a first for the
Wimmera in Victoria.
A quick look at the records of the species for the state in the Atlas of
Victorian Wildlife reveals there to be a single old (pre 1994) record from near
Dimboola. Lawrie's observation is certainly on the extreme northern edge of
this owls distribution in western Victoria and is an important record for the
species. Most observations for the species in western Victoria are from the near
coastal south west.
Masked Owls are listed as threatened in Victoria and an Action Statement
(management plan) is in preparation to address its conservation in the state.
