Over the last few days, Bob and Sadhana Cook and I visited the Tallageira
Scrub in the Victorian Wimmera. About 400km from Melbourne by road, west of
Horsham and less than 20km south of the Little Desert, Tallageira is one of
a few vegetation remnants on the north Wimmera plains. The rain stopped
just as we arrived on Saturday, stayed away on Sunday, and then recommenced
with a vengeance about 0600am on Monday!
Birding at Tallageira was interesting. Some species were surprisingly
scarce (eg. Brown Treecreeper, Eastern Yellow Robin, Jacky Winter) or absent
(eg. White-winged Chough, Restless Flycatcher).
Best birds were:
Masked Owl - one bird calling around camp most of the night on 10/6. First
Wimmera record?
Slender-billed Thornbill - a flock of 6 birds in Desert Banksia scrub on
10/6; minor range extension of some 15-20km south from Little Desert; first
record outside Little Desert or Big Desert?
White-fronted Honeyeater - numerous birds in several habitats, feeding on
banksia flowers (both Silver and Desert), Flame Heath and Yellow Gum; very
vocal - fantastic calls.
Forest Raven - surprisingly the most abundant raven; on the edge of its
range here.
