       Edwin,

Hunter Bird Observers Club has taken a close interest in the plans to develop John Browns Lagoon ( which is the official name for Colliery Dam ). We strongly opposed the original development proposal, because of problems that would be caused to the Jacana breeding area and to other important bird habitat. Cessnock City Council to their credit has been very receptive to our comments and suggestions and they have worked with the developer to achieve a much modified proposal. The modified proposal embobied all of the requests that the H.B.O.C. had made with the respect to the development. H.B.O.C. is ni longer opposed to the development that has now been approved by Cessnock City Council. If the development goes ahead as planned then there will no longer be a threat of an alternative development, which was for an open cut coal mine immeadiately adjacent. This would have isolated the lagoon from the surrounding habitat, plus caused who knows what other problems to the lagoon.

         H.B.O.C. Committee
