Birdline Victoria Update
for the week ending 4/06/01 Banded Stilts are turning up all over the place with nearly 700 having been reported in the last week! With the weather threatening to close in on Victorians it might be timely to start thinking about the 2001 Twitchathon this spring. Follow this link to get some more information about this great fund-raising event: http://home.iprimus.com.au/scooney/life_list.htm#thon 3 June 6 Crested Pigeons have taken up residence beside Bacchus Marsh Road a few Kilometres north of Corio Village, at the corner of Western Gateway Road, just before the Barwon Prison, thanks Russell Woodford Late May Spiney-cheeked Honeyeaters have been seen in the Bendigo region near the Wellsford State Forest at Barnadown, thanks Chris Tzaros 28 May The Gang Gang Cockatoos are still at the Brighton Golf Course, 29 days after they were first reported there, thanks Michael Norris 27 May 130 Banded Stilts were at Lake Victoria, Lonsdale Lakes Wildlife Reserve, Point Lonsdale, thanks Lawrie Conole 27 May Up to 500 Banded Stilts at Avalon Beach (between Werribee Sewage Farm & Geelong), this is an extremely large number for this bird, thanks Lawrie Conole 25 May Two Australian Bustards wandering in an open grassy paddock approximately 50 km North West of Nhill, thanks Chris Coleborn 25 May and preceding week Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters have irrupted in Northern Victoria, sightings range from Kerang to Gunbower and south to Boort and Mitiamo, thanks Chris Coleborn 23 May Around 100 Banded Stilts on the Austin Lagoon at the Werribee Treatment Plant, almost all without their bands. 20 May Up to 30 Freckled Ducks at Lake Borrie in the Werribee Sewage Treatment Plant, thanks Richard Nowotny 20 May Numerous Blue-Winged Parrots were seen on Reef Island in Westernport Bay, in crops behind the beach and opposite the Windmill, thanks Bob Berry 15 May A Square-tailed Kite was observed at the Bemm River Caravan Park, south west of Cann River in East Gippsland, thanks Philip Veerman 13 May A single Red-rumped Parrot was seen at Sandringham Golf Course and near Sandringham Harbour on the 4th, these Autumn records are unprecedented for the Bayside suburbs, thanks Michael Norris 12 & 13 May White-fronted Honeyeaters seen in box-ironbark forests and grassy woodlands at Morrl Morrl State Forest, Illawarra State Forest and Lake Lonsdale crown land, all in the Stawell area, well south of their usual range, thanks Simon Kennedy 12 May An Azure Kingfisher was seen in Willows on the Yarra River, about 1km upstream from the Studley Park Boat-house, along with six Gang Gang Cockatoos heading towards the city, thanks Grant Palmer 12 May 3 Painted Button-Quail in leaf litter of woodland between Yarra River and Yarra Boulevard in the Yarra Bend Park, 450 m east of the Studley Park Boat-house, thanks Grant Palmer 12 May 3 Australasian Bitterns, the first for winter, were seen at Edithvale Wetlands, thanks Mike Carter 12 May A Brown Quail was seen at Edithvale Wetlands, this is only the second record for this reserve, thanks Mike Carter 12 May 4 Freckled Ducks observed, both preening and swimming at approx midday at Austin Rd lagoon at Weribbee Treatment Plant, thanks Joy Tansey Birdline Victoria is a service for birdwatchers to report and find out about rare and unusual birds in Victoria and is brought to you by the VicGroup of Birds Australia.
