Hi there,
Some time ago, I think it was in 1995, after consultation with
the Broome Bird Observatory, Broome Shire and the local airport authorities,
Western Power erected an Osprey tower at Town Beach in Broome. This was in
response to attempts by a pair of Osprey to nest on top of a utility pole in
Chinatown near Woody's Garage in the centre of the Broome CBD. The pole on
which they were attempting to nest was also in the direct flight path of
aircraft.
Since the tower was built, it has remained conspicuously bare, apart from
the occasional Osprey eating the fish that they had caught in Roebuck Bay
and the odd Torresian Crow or Silver Gull.
However on Thursday that all changed when, on one of my regular visits to
the area, I observed an Osprey dropping a piece of nesting material on top
of those already on the tower and then flying to the top of a nearby light
pole and surveying its handiwork.
So far the Western Power tower has grown about thirty centimetres in this
way and whether this is enough for nesting to begin only time will tell.
In the meantime, congratulations and thank you to all those who organised
and built the tower.
Regards,
Phil Joy
