Bob Forsyth suggested that what Bird is That is a good reference for "Bird
Names" and I aggre with that. Another good source of Australian Bird Names
(although also a little out of date) in "An Index of Australian Bird Names"
CSIRO Division of Wildlife Research Technical Paper No. 20, 1969.

You sometimes see it in second hand bookshops but it is also possible that
copies are still available from the CSIRO Canberra

g'day all,

To add to this subject thread.

I often refer to early editions of Neville W Cayley's "What Bird is that"

These editions provide both the source and pronunciation of the species
"Scientific Name"

The later editions Revised and Enlarged by A.H.Chisholm, K.A.Hindwood and A.R.
McGill.
are readily found in 2nd hand bookshops at prices as low as $10.

For those birdo's interested in Bird Names and who go browsing thru the 2nd
hand bookshops, I suggest you also look out for J.D.Macdonald's "The
Illustrated Dictionary of Australian Birds by Common Name". This book provides
the known source of "Common Names".

Regards, Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
