Hi everybody -

For your information, the message below from Shirley Cook of Birds
Australia's Northern NSW Group. For further information please get in
touch with Shirley directly (contact details in message).

Most of you will already be aware that firewood collection is a major bird
conservation issue in Australia. It is great to see that so many people
are trying to come up with practical solutions to the problems caused by
removing what is often very valuable nesting habitat and shelter from the
environment to burn in domestic fireplaces.

Cheers,
Hugo

FIREWOOD:
A Burning Issue for the 21st Century

A Conference to raise awareness and explore solutions for firewood use that
reduces the impact on the environment

Armidale, NSW

Friday 25 - Saturday 26 May 2001

Six million tonnes of firewood
are consumed every year with serious impacts on the Australian environment.

The Commonwealth Government has released the discussion paper, A National
Approach to Firewood Collection and Use in Australia that proposes
strategies to address this issue.

As a result, National Parks Association of NSW is organising one of three
conferences in 2001 in conjunction with other environment groups. The other
conferences are taking place in Tasmania and South Australia.

NPA is a community group seeking protection for national parks and natural
environments in New South Wales

Themes of the Conference are:

· Firewood cutting and collecting - the overall impact

· Woodsmoke and your health

· What are the alternatives to burning wood?

· SOLUTIONS - Towards a sustainable firewood industry
