Hi Niven and bustard fans
No problem with parochiality, you must speak of your own experience. Both
you in the Top End and Robert Read in Alice Springs have reported a
decline in observed bustards and that's worth flagging. I too was
parochial when I described the situation I am familiar with in western
Qld, as were those who wrote of their southern Cape York experiences. We
(whom you rather unfortunately typify as "denying there's a Bustard
problem") have found Bustards to still be common. This seems to
demonstrate is that a decline is not universal.
The interesting thing is: what's going on in the Territory? I'd like to
hear your views on this (sorry if you've already stated them and I've
missed them). Has hunting pressure intensified recently around Darwin and
Alice Springs? What sort of wet seasons have you had - could the birds
just be following rain, hence food supplies elsewhere? What do you think
of John Woinarski's contention that altered fire regimes have promoted
invasion of savanna by native shrubs to the detriment of grassland
species?
