Report of Eaglehawk Neck pelagic trip on 12 March 2001

Group seabird excursion on "Pauletta"; people on board: Rob Berry, Gail Berry, Stuart Dashper, Chris Lester, Rohan Clarke, Laurie Jones (Victoria), David Stewart, Barbara Stewart, Ross Mullholland, Bill Sleight, Marilyn Rix, Keri Rix (NSW), Jan Smith (USA), Bill Wakefield and Tim Reid (Tas).

Weather: Initially fine (2/8 cloud) with ~10 knot NW wind and 2m swell from NE. At 0850 a SW front came through with wind increasing to 20-30 knots and seas rising to state 4 with 2m sea from SW.

Sea temps 18.2-19.1oC (CSIRO satellite map gave temperatures of 19.1oC in the area).

Departed Eaglehawk Neck jetty 0726, arrived Hippolyte Rock 0810. Reached shelf edge 0900 at 43o11S 148o09E. Worked north-west along shelf edge and beyond until ~1200 then zig-zagged in and out a couple of times. Arrived back at Eaglehawk Neck jetty about 1530.

Many Short-tailed Shearwaters seen just beyond Hippolyte Rock and beyond, numbers of albatrosses observed just before the front past, but generally low numbers after that.
