Hi all,
I am interested to know the list's impression of the impact of fuel
reduction burning on the suitability of habitat for birds.
Fuel reduction burns tend to simplify the flora of the area if it is
subjected to frequent low intensity fires and its very aim is to reduce
fine fuels (less than pencil thick plant material), which must impact
severely on the habitat of (especially) small birds. Furthermore a more
open forest not only allows access by introduced predators but assists
higher trophic level predators in their hunting.
On the other hand, Australia has evolved many obligate fire seeders, so
complete exclusion of fire may also lead to a slowly decreasing floral
diversity.
Does anyone have any thoughts?
