Dear birding-ussers

Took a British bird watcher around some of the Sydney birding hotspots
last weekend and had some nice surprises -

Saturday 17th Feb
Wattle Flat, Royal National Park Adult Black-faced Monarch with
dependent juvenile
Excellent views of 2 separate Wonga Pigeons
Rufous Fantail attended us for half an hour
Azure Kingfisher sat and posed in gentle sunlight
Bower of Satin Bowerbird awash with blue bottle
tops and straws.

Bonnievale, Bundeena 2 adult Nankeen Nightherons with 2 juveniles on the
lagoon.
1 adult Striated Heron pursuing fish out in the
open on the mudflats -
caught two and tripped over some rocks when ankle
deep in water.
                        1 Juvenile Dollarbird

Wattamolla Peregrine Falcon doing its best (without success)
to scare birds
out of the heathland on the northern walk from the
waterfall. Copper-tail
skinks and water dragons showing well in the sun.

Penryn Road 2 Bar-tailed Godwits (from 40 or so roosting with
Silver Gulls) showing good
                        amount of reddish-brown on breasts.
Too many boats, dogs, people around for any other
waders.

Sunday 18 February
Cattai Nat.Park An excellent show of our usual woodland birds for
this first time pommie
                        visitor, including
                        3 Wedge-tail Eagles soaring
                        3 Crested Shrike-tits
                        Female Cicadabird
                        Family of 7 o r 8 White-winged Choughs
Large mob of kangaroos - at least 12 in all

Mitchell Park 1 Powerful Owl in tree on left just inside start of
rainforest walk

Scheyville Nat.Park Scarlet, White-naped, Fuscus Honeyeaters
feeding in flowering gums (Grey
Box?) with Noisy Friarbirds, plus juvenile
Olive-backed Orioles.
                        2 Rainbow Bee-eaters nearby.
                        2 Yellow-tufted HEs harrassing a small goanna.
Dipped on the Speckled Warblers and Jacky Winter!

It's great to introduce a newcomer to our "common" local birds, and get
excitement from seeing a pair of Galahs feeding on a lawn on Windsor Road
and a mob of Straw-necked Ibis feeding amongst the stock!
