Dear Bird Netters all the best to the new colony of Pied Herons at Macquarie Marshes. Here in PNG their numbers have increased tremendously this year - or at least on our campus they have. Usually we have a peak of around 200 - 220 birds, but for the last week we have had 800 -950 roosting (sleeping at night) on the lawn between lakes 1 and 2, right near the Library. It is a great sight to see and hear. Some roost in a Jacaranda and Eucalypt tree but most are on the grassed bank. Just as well this campus is a bird sanctuary.
