G'day all,
Over the last week Phil Maher, Tom Whaller, Steve and myself have visited
the Tullakool Saltworks. They are about 35km along the Barham to Moulamein
Road in SW NSW. Barham is on the VIC/NSW border between Echuca and Swan
Hill. There were good numbers of waders generally, with sizeable flocks of
Banded & Black-winged Stilts, Red-necked Avocets, Marsh Sandpipers,
Greenshanks, thousands of Red-necked Stints, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Curlew
Sandpipers, Red-capped Plovers & Masked Lapwings. There were also two Ruffs
earlier in the week, and up to four Pectoral Sandpipers were seen on each
visit, as was a Long-toed Stint on several occasions. There were good
numbers of Marsh Terns and some White-winged Black Terns were also seen. An
Australian Bittern was calling and Glossy Ibis came in to roost late each
day. There were thousands of Grey Teal, but also Aust Shelducks, Hard Head,
Shovelers, Pink-eared & Musk Ducks. Freckled Ducks are sometimes seen at
this time of the year here too. There were a good number of other birds seen
too, such as White-winged Fairy Wrens, Peregrine Falcons , the Royal and
Yellow-billed Spoonbills, White-necked and White-faced Hersons,
Intermediate Egret, Black Swans, Gullbill Terns, Spotted Harrier,
White-fronted Chats etc. With waders way down in numbers in Victoria
generally, it is good to see such good numbers at Tullakool.
Regards,
Chris Coleborn
