Yes, I know Neil and have read his papers.  I have also looked at HANZAB but there is no mention of nesting on/in the reeds.  I also surfed the web last night but could find no mention of nesting other than in trees.  Most of the references were from the US.  The Cattle Egrets started abandoning the old heronry a number of years ago when a housing development was completed almost up to the edge of it.  They moved to the more remote parts of the swamp away from the development.  I am not sure if there was any other reason.
