Hi,
A quick check of the Cairns Esplanade (16 54 56 145 46 25) yesterday 29th Jan.
saw plenty of waders present. There was 1 Broad-billed Sandpiper, 30+ Terek
Sandpipers, 20+ Grey-tailed Tattlers, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Eastern
Curlew, Common Greenshank, 100+ Great Knot, Red-necked Stint, 5 Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Pied Oystercatcher, 4 Pacific Golden Plover,
Lesser and Greater Sand Plover and Masked Lapwing. Other birds included 2 Magpie
Geese, Australian Pelican, Royal Spoonbill and 30+ Little Tern.
Trucks are still depositing sand at the southern end of the esplanade filling in
a space between the esplanade development and the Cityport development along the
wharf. The previously filled area is still grassed and there is talk of
downsizing the size of the proposed swimming lagoon. Our mayor has gone on
record as saying " The normal tidal action, and existing bird habitats along the
mudflats, will not be affected in anyway by these works." We will keep
monitoring.
Cheers
