Following Denise Goodfellow's query about the numbers of species in each
city, someone hypothesised maybe 200+ spp in Brisbane.

Given the enormous variety of habitats contained within Brisbane's huge
municipal area, including coastal, wetlands, woodlands, grasslands, and the
extensive rainforests of Brisbane Forest Park, I'd feel confident that the
species total would be in excess of 300.

Here at "Abberton", between Brisbane and Toowoomba our house list is 190
spp, the list for the surrounding Lockyer Valley stands at 319spp, and the
total of spp recorded within a day's round trip of home is 410 (not on the
same day!).

All of these lists are readily available in downloadable form at
http://www.abberton.org. Incidentally, I've just updated the site with new
photos and local sightings up to the end of 2000.

The Toowoomba Bird Observers have been keeping monthly species records for
their local area since 1975, and have published annual summaries showing
month by month sightings during all of that time. The species total for the
TBO local study area is currently 285. Hopefully, they will be making
available a 25 year summary sometime soon.
