It depends very much on how you define the town area, and how often a
species needs to be seen to qualify.
For Alice Springs I would guess that there are about 40 species regularly
seen in the streets and urban gardens. On the other hand if you wait long
enough almost any of the species found in the region might turn up. For
example Variegated Fairy-wren, Black, White-fronted and Grey-fronted
Honeyeaters have been seen in gardens, but very rarely. The NT Museum was
handed a Freckled Duck that came to grief attempting to land on a swimming
pool, and a Grey Falcon was seen perched in an urban backyard.
If the Olive Pink Botanic Garden is included in the town area then more
species, even the Grey Honeyeater would be on the list. For a 5 km circle
from the Post Office, which would take in the Old Telegraph Station NP and
the Sewage Ponds, the list would be about 200.
