The Directory by Schodde & Mason has a good part of the mallee region as "zones of intergradation between abutting ulrataxa", indicating those birds would be variable. So there is your answer and I'm certainly not going to type a page of text here.

Can anyone tell whether there is supposed to be a recognised "mallee form" of the Jacky Winter. How different is it from other Jacky Winters physically in appearance and/or call.
