Some good sightings recently for Perth.
There are 3 to 6 Baillon's Crakes at Regent Waters near Lake
Joondalup. Follow James Spiers Drive. These are very easy to see. There
was a report of a strange heron (possibly Striated but unlikely) at this site.
There is a Little Bittern at the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre. Stand in
front of the wildlife centre at dusk and scan the base of the typha reeds
to the right across the water. This was atlassed about three weeks ago and
I saw it tonight so it is apparently resident.
There was an unconfirmed report of a 'big seabird' along the Canning River
near Thornlie. This seems to be extremely unusual as the river is only a
very narrow creek in this area, but obviously something different was there.
I flushed 7 Painted Button-quail at Bungendore State Forest. These are my
first for this site, but they are likely to stay around. They were near
the first corner (about 100 metres or so from the car park). I also
flushed a quail from waist high Patterson's Curse at the orchard at Wungong
Gorge. I was fairly certain that this was a Brown Quail which is very
uncommon near Perth. The orchard is hopelessly overgrown with Patterson's
Curse, and I no longer recommend visit this site which used to be excellent
for Red-eared Firetail, Red-winged Fairy-wren and White-breasted
Robin. There was a Red-eared Firetail on the lawn at Wungong Gorge near
the barbecue shelter.
