Visited Surfers Parade, Thirroul today looking for a vagrant Barred
Cuckoo-shrike (third record in two hundred and twelve years) to County of
Cumberland- Illawarra. Met the finders and have no doubt it is a genuine
report. Unfortunately it was last seen on Sunday after having spent all of
Saturday eating the fruits of a small-leafed fig. It was a solitary adult
which gave extended views. There is quite a clump of littoral figs at this
site very close to the beach. On Sunday a storm removed most of the figs and
the BCS has departed but to where? It must be out there somewhere along with
the Little Bronze-cuckoo, Wompoo Fruit-dove, Varied Triller, Forest
Kingfisher-a host of subtropical rarities to central NSW.
