Following from Penny's note today, I went for a
walk in inner city Brisbane (Red HILL - Ashgrove) this morning and came across
two male Koels calling out in the open on the same dead tree. This was followed
by a fly-past of three Channel-bills being chased by a couple of crows. Whilst
following these, a small number of White-throated Needletails were hawking
overhead. I thought their appearance always prempted a change of weather but it
has been sweltering here in Brisbane all day with no sign of a
change.
As Penny also points out, it is amazing how much
birdlife you can find in the heart of big cities. Apart from the above cuckoos,
there are resident Coucals (whoop-whoop-whooping) around here as well as the
ubiquitous Brush-Turkeys which wander along busy streets in the early morn. In
the parks along local creeks Superb Wrens, Cisticolas, Spice Finches as well as
the usual Butcherbirds, Currawongs, Blue-faced H/e, and the like are always
present.
