You need to go sea- or
shorebirding to get greater exposure to pet names !
When birds are in a mass or passing by quickly, abbreviations
become almost imperative. Even so, there is a clubby aspect to their use
that identifies obsessiveness or fanaticism.
In a shore-birding group you will soon hear names such as
"Sharpie", various "Sands" including Marsh, Curlew and Wood,
perhaps even an excited "Pec" that has nothing to do with the body
beautiful.
Out at sea if someone points urgently to "Tahiti" it
is unlikely that Bora Bora is coming into view. And if you hear
"Wedgie", it's probably not atomic.
