As the Secretary of our local Canberra Ornithologists' Group Inc. (COG) I
was asked by the Canberra Times to do an article on birdwatching for its
Senior Times Supplement.

As COG is really trying to attract younger people into birdwatching there
was some discussion about placing an article in the seniors' supplement but
we decided any publicity was better than none at all so I prepared the
article with the heading "Birdwatching is for Everyone" and submitted it
with a selection of beautiful photographs of birds taken by another COG
member.

The Editor was very enthusiastic and arranged for a group of birders to meet
with their own photographer. The result was a 2 page full colour feature
article which appeared on 23 October.

I don't know if it attracted new members to COG or encouraged people to take
up birdwatching but at least it was publicity for birds and birders.

I think many local newspapers would be interested in publishing articles
about birding clubs in their region. We should all try to promote bird
watching as an enjoyable and interesting activity.
