I have just loaded updated Lockyer Valley and Abberton bird lists to the
website http://www/abberton.org .
Several people had mentioned that they had experienced problems downloading
the previous lists; I'm sure you will find that has now been fixed, but if
anyone does have any difficulty reading or copying the lists, I would be
very pleased if you would let me know.
The new lists are notated as to status hereabouts, which I hope will make
them more useful to potential visitors to the area.
All up, 409 species have been recorded within a day's round trip from
Abberton, and I am currently working on notating an overall list to show
the occurrence of those spp in adjacent and nearby areas such as the Darling
Downs, Bunya Mountains, Granite Belt, Brisbane Forest Park, coastal
habitats, and of course, the Lockyer Valley.
I will post further as soon as soon as the full list of 409 spp is available
on-site.
October 2000 has been far and away the birdiest month we have ever had here.
Spring, coupled with the beginnings of some decent rain, and a fair helping
of advancing revegetation, brought the garden list to 111 species for the
month, 190 spp overall. The Lockyer Valley list has also grown, and now
stands at 319 spp.
The Toowoomba Bird Observers came here on Sunday 29th October to celebrate
their 25th anniversary. It was a great party, with birders young and old
enjoying an afternoon of talking about birds, birding, and all that goes
with it, with occasional flybys from Nankeen Night Herons, Azure & Sacred
Kingfishers, White-winged Trillers, Australian Hobby, Scarlet Honeyeaters,
Dollarbirds, Channel-billed Cuckoos and so on, and so on.
The Toowoomba birders have been keeping systematic monthly records in the
area since 1975. The first dozen or so years of summaries were published as
attachments to their monthly newsletters, and the second dozen or so years
are currently being brought up to date. I can't wait to get my hands on all
that tasty data!
