I should clarify one point made by Allan Morris; all the specimens handed in
at the zoo have been Short-tailed. We received telephone reports of
Wedge-tailed (from some very competent observers and I would be very
embarassed if I've misquoted), but as he surmised, we have not seen
Wedge-tailed carcasses. Regarding timing, the comment made by our
veterinarians that the wreck seemed a month early is based on the early rush
of telephone calls from the public. We usually start getting calls from
November onwards; this year we got a lot of calls starting in early October.
No science here, which is why my first posting was so tentative.
