Hi All,
Enroute to the Broome Pelagic (see the Pallister Report) we flewby
Darwin on Oct.6th to try for routine ticks missed because of the Big Wet at
Easter.
Got the lot except Red Goshawk and Button-quails, viz Rufous Owl,
Chestnut Rail, Large-tailed Nightjar, Zitting Cisticola, White-throated
Grasswren, Chestnut-quilled Rock Pigeon, Hooded Parrot, the very unusual
female Variegated Fairywren ssp.dulcis with all white face and big eyes, no
blue on the face at all, and Little Curlews , numerous (100+) around the
Knuckeys Lagoon complex , passing through.
Interesting was an Osprey over Copperfield Dam just south of Pine
Creek, and Pied Herons scavenging on the breakfast tables at Cooinda Lodge,
(cleaner and daintier than the disgusting Ibis at Sydney's Botanic Gardens
Cafe). On the Yellow Waters, birds are habituated to the tour boats, perform
and interact as far removed.
Not the enormous numbers of everything seen at the end of the
wet, but still a bonanza in mangroves, rain forest pockets and around
waterholes
Those almost final NT ticks were hard work on the whole,with a
couple of visits to most sites, but were mostly mostly repeated superviews
of multiple birds.
