Gooday Frank,
I live at Bowen a community of 8500 people on the east coast of Qld.
20 00S. Our sewage effluent is provided to the local Golf Course for
irrigation purposes where they store it in a Turkey Nest Dam. Effluent is
also provided to Mullers Lagoon for irrigation purposes and is stored in
ponds with typhus spp. to reduce nutrients and phosphates prior to
re-use.
Prior to all this being put in place through improved Environmental
Standards the local authority discharged treated sewage into beautiful Port
Denison, this of course was in the 1970-80's.
The added benefit of recycling the effluent between users has been the
improvement for birdlife at the Turkey nest (regular breeding records for
ducks etc) at the Bowen Golf Course, plus the developed ponds and slow
discharge storage area at Mullers Lagoon. These areas are now a birds Mecca
were nothing really existed previously. There was more than enough water to
share for a town with a Treatment Plant designed for a community of 10,000
people.
What is the population of Derby and has the Local Authority a Strategic Plan
with goals set for eg Protection of Environment, Tourism potential?
Jon Wren
