On our honeymoon in 1967 we went through Coen and met one of the guys who had been shot. His wife was licencee at the "Coen Hotel", his record precluded himself from the licence. He showed us , with some pride, a row of bullet hole scars across his torso, from having been sprayed with an automatic .22, and told the same story of having ended up in Cairns Hoispital next to his attacker who he had shot in self defence. His story was that the adjacent landholder was shouting free beers all day to everyone in the district at the annual Laura Races, an uncharacteristic act which prompted his boss to send two men to check the boundaries instead of going to the races. Sure enough they found the duffers and the rest appears to be entrenched in local history. Cheers Michael |
