Hello all,
The Swift Parrot is currently in the midst of its southward migration, so
south-east birders keep a lookout! They are spread out like Brown's cows at the
moment, with some in Tasmania, others in Victorian winter haunts, and others on
the move.
There have been four records in Gippsland in the last nine days, after a
five-month absence of records from that area. Three records have come in from
NSW from places that are not typical winter haunts, and two records have been
received from Melbourne suburbs.
I look forward to more of these "passage" sightings. I emailed Russell Woodford
on the subject of how difficult it will be to establish migration routes, but
since then a number of clues have been sent my way. However, we aren't likely
to see a "time-lapse" map of Swift Parrots moving up and down the coast a la the
Grey Fantail maps anytime soon!
