On the waterbus to Couchie Mudlo Is [SEQ] this am, I was woken out of my
daze by the sight of an albatross shaped bird zooming about the wave
tops. [most unusual as you barely see even a silver gull in southern
Moreton Bay]. Anyhow, all I got to see was that it was brown and white
with a pelican's wingspan - presumably a immature gannet or booby -
before it was out of sight.
There were over 40 sp on the island for the atlas sheet, including a
large flock of peacocks. I saw both white-throated warblers and
mangrove warblers round the golf course [nice to hear both calling -
enabled me to pick the difference in their warbles]. Another highlight
was a flock of little lorikeets beside the playing field, while another
was hearing a midafternoon colloquy of curlews and finding a group of 7
bush thick-knees in a tete-a-tete with the peacocks.
The humour highlight of the day was a poor bare-headed and bare-backed
bloke being harassed along a dirt track by a pied butcherbird.
Interestingly, the butcherbird chased him for over 300 metres - further
than you expect a maggie to carry on. [the butcherbird totally ignored
me - obviously a cyclist was much better sport].
