Such a wonderful spring morning (Thursday) that I'd like to share it with
everyone.
Trevor & Kym Ford are here and we breakfasted on the verandah, watching what
ever came by. We recorded more than 60 sp between 9.30 and around 10.30am -
too many to list, but some lovely spring highlights among them:
White-winged Triller - almost iridescently beautiful, like Terry Pacey saw
out Dalby way;
Leaden Flycatcher - verging on the satin, singing enthusiastically all the
time;
Speckled Warblers - in the birdbath;
Two Azure Kingfishers - sitting and fishing close by the house;
Two Ospreys - one carrying a big fish. They came and went a few times then
one sat around in a dead tree for a while;
White-bellied Sea-eagle - at the same time as the Ospreys first arrived;
Wedge-tailed Eagle - overhead;
Collared Sparrowhawk - sending everything flying for cover, and then sitting
for photographs on an exposed branch close to the house;
Whistling Kite - cruising around;
Eastern Whipbird - brilliantly olive-green, and heading towards his
favourite birdbath when I got diverted by the Ospreys;
Variegated Fairy-wren - surely the bluest blue there is;
Red-backed Fairy-wren - and surely the reddest red;
A short sortie around the garden for Trevor and me in the afternoon added
Nankeen Night Heron, Rufous Fantail, Sacred Kingfisher (heard a week or so
ago, but first time seen this spring), Black-shouldered Kite, Nankeen
Kestrel and around 4.25pm a busy platypus in the creek.
I'd better stop, or I'll just list the lot. Hobby late yesterday afternoon;
Nankeen Night-herons at dusk last night; Squirrel Gliders a bit later.
Altogether today 84 spp at Abberton, mostly from the verandah - a lazy day
and my kind of birding.
And here comes summer!
