Evening, all.
A few recent observations that may be of interest:
1 unidentified Corella at Lyndhurst (between Cranbourne and Dandenong,
south-east of Melbourne) last Wednesday 6 September.
2 unidentified Corellas at North Balwyn last Thursday 7 September (both
corella observations of birds flying across road on which I was driving in
heavy traffic so no opportunity for closer look).
3 small Lorikeets (airborne, normal Lorikeet flight, against the sun, not
calling, noticeably smaller than Musk Lorikeets which were present in
dozens), East Burwood, last Thursday 7 September.
About 25 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos flying south at lowish level across
the Eastern Freeway at Yarra Bend last Thursday afternoon 7 September (only
about 6 km NE of Melbourne city centre) - never seen them that close to the
city before.
1 Horsfield Bronze-cuckoo calling plaintively and apparently interminably
from a stump at the Kirk Point boat ramp, immediately south of Lake Borrie,
about 50 km south-west of Melbourne, last Friday morning 8 September.
Spotted Pardalotes calling on several recent mornings near home in Glen
Waverley, about 20 km east of Melbourne city centre.
Spotted Pardalote and Grey Fantail in Red Gums at Nettleton Park, a
recreation reserve in Glen Iris, about 10 km SSE of Melbourne (can't recall
pardalotes here before and only ever seen one Grey Fantail in the area, many
years ago)
My parents report hearing a sharpish churring call round home (also Glen
Iris) at night on a few occasions a few weeks back. I got a chance to play
them some nocturnal calls from the BOCA bird call tapes at the weekend and
at the first Owlet-Nightjar call they both said immediately "That's it".
There are some big old Red Gums nearby along Gardiners Creek.
Birding and atlassing at Lower Glenelg National Park next week - any
suggestions of especially good spots or things to look out for will be
welcome. However, can't promise to follow any particular leads up, as we'll
have eight boys between the ages of four and 14 with us, so serious birding
could be a wee bit circumscribed.
