Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I posted anything. Yesterday (2.9.00) the
Suncoast Bird Observers Group had their monthly outing to the Toorbul
area (Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane Qld), and lunch was to be had
viewing the waders. This gave me an opportunity to do high tide counts
and have a look if any of the speices had started to return. It was a
fine dry day, clear skies but very gusty westerly winds that forced some
of the birdo's home before lunch. The wind certainly shook the scopes
around but the bonus was that the birds were faced into the wind, which
meant we were not looking at their backsides.

We visited the three roosts along the esplanade and noted the following
number of waders.

6 Pied Oystercatcher
1 Masked Lapwing
98 Black-winged Stilt
141 Eastern Curlew
141 Whimbrel
45 Grey-tailed Tattler
7 Greenshank
1 Terek Sandpiper
3 Black-tailed Godwit (juvenile birds)
280 Bar-tailed Godwit (one with extensive breeding plumage)
18 Red Knot (most with some breeding plumage evident)
3 Great Knot
4 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper
34 Curlew Sandpiper (a lot with some breeding plumage evident)
No leg flags were sighted.

Other birds recorded on my countsheet included Australian Pelican,
Little Pied Cormorant, Little Egret,White-faced Heron, Black Swan,
Gull-billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Sacred Ibis, Pacific Black Duck,
Chestnut and Grey Teal, Whistling Kite and Osprey.

On the way into Toorbul we stopped and had a look at Bishops Marsh,
which is drying out fast with the dry windy conditions SEQ is
experiencing. We spotted, 3 Marsh Sandpipers, 20 Sharp-tailed
Sandpipers, a few Black-winged Stilt along with Yellow-billed and Royal
Spoonbill, Pacific Black Duck, and Chestnut Teal. Some of the group who
arrived earlier saw Brolga as well.

I do not have a record of what the rest of the group saw as I only
joined them for the waders. If anyone needs that information it can be
arranged.
