Hi Birders,
I was interested to hear about the Painted
Honeyeater, seen by Tony Russell at Packsaddle two weeks ago. Had the
controversy about the "black" White-winged Fairy-wren not arisen, would we in
NSW have heard about it? (Trever Q, would this constitute
"suppression"?).
Seriously though, according to Morris, McGill &
Holmes 1981 the Status and Distribution of the Painted Honeyeater in NSW is as
follows:-
"Moderately common . Migrant; recorded October-May
(once August), numerous November-April. Eggs October-February.
Western Plains, Slopes, Tablelands, Mid-north Coast
and Hunter. West to Warrego River, beyond Cobar, Ivanhoe & Wanganella; east
to Tenterfield, Tamworth, Barnard River, Bulga, Munghorn Gap, Gilgandra, Bogan
Gate, Cowra, Canberra & Jinjellic. Also recorded at Tibooburra in 1974,
Lower Manning River in 1975 and Burrier near Nowra about 1950. Formerly on
the Cumberland Plain. Woodlands and tall scrublands, where heavily parasitised
by mistletoe."
Since then some other interesting records include
near Wyong (on the Central Coast ) 1982, near Wanaaring 1991 and a number of
recent records from the Cumberland Plains west of Sydney.No other August records
as far as I can see.
So a Painted Honeyeater at Packsaddle near
Tibooburra is not unexpected but August is an unusual time of the year in which
to see them.
