Members of Blue Mountains Bird Observers reported 101 species in JUNE and
111 species in JULY within the Blue Mountains City boundaries. Notable
sightings included:

PACIFIC BAZA - Reported at Springwood mid-June and at Sun Valley during July.
WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE - Only one sighting in June (at Mount Riverview) but
several reports during July from Hazelbrook to Blackheath, including one
carrying a Ringtail Possum, late morning on 7/7 at Shipley Plateau.
LITTLE EAGLE - Seen at Springwood in June and July; also 1 over Kings
Tableland on 29/7.
BUFF-BANDED RAIL - 1 at Euroka (in National Park near Glenbrook) on 14/7.
LEWIN'S RAIL - Heard at a regular site in Katoomba on 10/6 and at least 2
in same place on 10/7.
BAR-SHOULDERED DOVE - 1 in heathland near Boar's Head rock at Katoomba on 29/7.
GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO - The only reports were from the Wentworth Falls area.
YELLOW-TAILED BLACK-COCKATOO - Continued to be seen in large flocks. At
Woodford, up to 60+ and, on another day, 84 were counted in June and 40+
seen regularly during July. At Katoomba a flock of 60-70 near Boar's Head
on 29/7. Large groups were also seen at Faulconbridge and Wentworth Falls.
MUSK LORIKEET - Rarely seen in the Blue Mountains, 2 or 3 flew past at
Katoomba on 4/7.
SHINING BRONZE-CUCKOO - First bird calling north of Leura on 24/7. There
were quite a few records of FAN-TAILED CUCKOOS during both months, as per
normal.
BARKING OWL - Heard in bushland behind houses at Hazelbrook, 30/7 (as
already reported to Birding-Aus by Timothy Hyde).
HONEYEATERS - Large numbers feeding in banksia - see my posting earlier
this week. 18 species reported in the area.
NOISY FRIARBIRD - Only one June record: 1 at Woodford on 3/6. Returned to
Lapstone 20/7 and Kings Tableland 29/7.
JACKY WINTER - A sighting at Hazelbrook in July.
RUFOUS WHISTLER - 1 wintering male seen at Narrow Neck near Katoomba on 2/6.
OLIVE-BACKED ORIOLE - Pair returned to Lapstone 27/7.
MISTLETOEBIRD - Unusually conspicuous in July in the upper mountains,
including a flock of 6+ near Bell on 12/7.

The Blue Mountains Bird Observers compile records of birds within the Blue
Mountains City boundaries, which includes the area between Hawkesbury
Heights, Mount Riverview and Lapstone in the east; Megalong Valley, Shipley
Plateau and Mount York in the west and Mount Wilson in the north.
Annual membership is $17 and all members receive a full list of birds
reported each month and a monthly newsletter including trip reports and
members' observations.
